The Caribbean Utilities Company has received approval for a large battery which can store some 20 megawatts of energy – equivalent to around 20% of Cayman’s daily energy needs.
The energy storage systems will be connected to the Hydesville (West Bay) and Prospect Substations and will provide extensive power system optimisation capabilities -from spinning reserve capacity to improved frequency response, to enhanced grid stability. This project will also result in savings on fuel costs.
In recent years, Grand Cayman has experienced significant growth, resulting in an increased demand for electricity. The latest data from the Cayman Islands Economics and Statistics Office 2022 Compendium of Statistics indicates a 24% growth in population for the Cayman Islands between 2018 and 2022 alone.
The rise of decentralized energy systems, including microgrids and distributed renewable energy sources, is fostering the growth of grid-scale battery storage. These localized systems enable communities, businesses, and even individual homeowners to generate, store, and manage their electricity independently of centralized grids.
